As we prepared for tomorrow night’s festivities, I took inventory of all the wonderful gifts I received during the year. Despite all the uncertainty and challenges that 2020 was, I felt blessed. Not because of the material things but for the relational gifts I received this year. This year I got answers to many prayer requests related explicitly to important relationships in my life.

This year I helped usher in my eldest son into adulthood, strengthened my relationship with my wife, healed old wounds with my father, made new friendships, and was encouraged by old friends. Also, I received confirmation on a new direction in my life and, most importantly, grew closer to the Lord and found a new peace in my heart.

Thinking about all of this, I realized none of this would be possible if not for the birth and death of Jesus Christ. God’s love for us is so great that He desires for us to be in an eternal relationship with Him. For this very reason, he gave us the ultimate gift, His Son. As we open presents this Christmas, enjoy and celebrate His furious love for us.

No matter how little or abundant the material gifts you get this Christmas, nothing will ever come close to spending eternity with Christ. They say Christmas is more about giving, but I say Christmas is more about receiving and meditating on God’s unparalleled goodness and love for us from now until forever. What he desires is for us to burn for Him the way He burns for us.
