We just wrapped up the year and the kids and us received many gifts for Christmas. As the years go by, I lean more towards experiences rather than things. I’m no longer enthused as much as I used to be about getting “things” for Christmas. Considering this, I now ask for time with the family, hand made cards, hanging out with friends, etc.

A recent book I read confirmed my change in perspective. The book stated that when we change a have to a get, our who perspective on that issue changes. It reframes the issue in a more positive light. For example, instead of saying I have to go to work, you say I get to go to work. Instead of I have to help my wife, I get to help my wife. I have to spend time with the kids, I get to spend time with the kids.

Changing your “have” to “get” gives you a sense of empowerment but more importantly, gratitude. Things don’t seem to come from a place of obligation, rather, deliberate decision. The truth is, God gives you choices. You don’t “have” to do all he asks, you “get” to do al he asks because in the end, he’s looking for a wiling heart. More than that, he “gets” to give the air you breathe and all you need to live. He really doesn’t “have” to give you anything.
