Last year, I started doing work for a local animal hospital. One of the most significant benefits to the community is the fact the hospital never closes. It tends to sick pets 24-hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. As an ER and specialist animal hospital, they’re ready for any situation.

What makes the hospital successful is not the equipment or facilities but rather the doctors and staff. On some days, the doctors are overwhelmed and visibly exhausted. Their exhaustion comes from dealing with the pet’s issues and balancing their owner’s needs and expectations.

The other day I sat down with the medical director and asked her what kept her going during those difficult days. “There are days it’s tough, and I’m not sure how I’m going to get through the day. That’s when I remind myself why I do this. I also look forward to seeing the pets reunite with the owners who care for them. I enjoy helping animals get better again and live productive lives with their owners.”

This doctor’s story reminds me of how Jesus called us all to help the spiritually sick. We’re to attend to those most in need not only for themselves but also for their impact on others.
