Let us not grow weary and always be ready for His return.

One day as I headed off to work, I did like any other day and jumped in the car, put on the seat belt, and turned the ignition. However, this time things were a bit different. As I started placing my phone on the center console, I noticed it was open. The more I saw, the more I realized someone had broken into the car.

After taking inventory, it appeared they only took some spare change and a phone charger. What left me perplexed was how the thieves broke in. I was surprised because there was no forced entry, and I knew with certainty that I had locked the car. I then discovered that the thieves had also broken into the cars of various neighbors on the block.

The police theorized that the thieves had used a “master key” or device to unlock the cars. Apparently, this key is used for a specific manufacturer brand and is usually only available at the dealer level. Regardless of how they broke in, I was concerned and had hopeful anticipation that they would return to catch them.

Throughout that week, I would wake up at random hours and look out the window for a few minutes and then return to bed. Some nights I would wake up and sit near the window for some time, keeping watch. Eventually, I grew weary of trying to catch these thieves as I realized they would likely not return.

Surprisingly a few months later, the thieves returned and again broke into cars on the block. This time we weren’t affected because we had purchased a new vehicle of a different make. However, determined to be ready and vigilant not to be victimized again, many of our neighbors installed 24-hour surveillance systems.

This story reminds me of how we may become weary and complacent awaiting our Savior’s promised arrival. We tend to focus too much on things of this world and lose sight of our divine mission.

Scripture tells us to stay vigilant because His return will be like a thief in the night. We know not the hour or day, but regardless, when he returns, we will have to give an account of what we did with what God gave us. So let us not grow weary and always be ready for His return.
