Seeking kingdom treasure brings blessings, not curses.
The other day while channel surfing, I came across a long-running TV series. The Curse of Oak Island is a reality television show that follows brothers and treasure hunters Rick and Marty Lagina. After learning about many other explorers’ failed attempts to find long-lost treasures, the two purchased most of the island.
Oak Island, a small, wooded island just off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, is a treasure trove of stories. Legend has it that in 1795, three teenage boys discovered a strange, man-made hole on Oak Island, and after digging, they found several intriguing artifacts. This discovery fed rumors of buried treasures in the area, primarily since it occurred around the end of the piracy era. As a result, for more than 200 years afterward and at the cost of millions of dollars, dozens have attempted to find the “big score.”
Intrigued and entranced from childhood, Rick and Marty Lagina pick up where others left off today. This is even after knowing about the tragedies and “curses” assigned to the island. Now entering its 10th season, the show documents these men’s obstacles and victories to find the anticipated “greatest treasure in history.” Unfortunately, they’ve only found some historical artifacts and fragments but nothing of significant monetary value.
These men have invested significant money and time seeking a treasure they hope will be found. Their story reminds me of how Scripture tells a similar story. When someone learns about the kingdom of God, they will do anything and everything to find a way to secure this treasure. Even to the point of giving up all they have. They know that seeking kingdom treasure brings blessings, not curses.
