One of the things we love doing as a family is spending time out on the boat. I purchased this boat a couple of years back after selling a project car. I sold the car because I realized the boat could provide teaching moments and a lifetime of memories for the family.

Recently we decided to go out on the water after a long hiatus. That day, there was a lot on my mind, and by the time we were a few miles out, I realized I forgot to pay the marina parking fee. I mentioned this to the family and then unsuccessfully tried locating the parking number to pay by phone as well as calling a friend to help. Finally, I ran out of options and told them we would pay when we returned to the marina.

A few hours later, we returned, and by God’s grace were not fined, so I located the number and memorized it but again was distracted and forgot. As we’re driving home, my son continued to remind me we already parked and still had not paid and asked when we were going to pay. “Later. I’m driving right now.” I said.

Sure enough, later on, I forgot. Once again, my son reminded me I had to pay. Finally, the following day as we’re driving over to see grandmother, I remembered and told my son I was paying it. I then thanked him for his integrity and for holding me accountable. That day I became a student of my twelve-year-old son.
