“Homestead Rescue” is a reality TV show based on the ways Marty, Matt, and Misty Raney use their building, farming, and hunting expertise to help people who strive to live off the grid. The premise of the show is that homesteaders in need call them for their help.

The Raney’s give themselves just seven days to help the owners become self-sustained. In one episode, a couple was at the end of their rope, ready to call it quits. They moved off the homestead and ended up living in town, in a run-down home. This situation was far from their dream to “live off the land.”

They moved off the homestead because they had no running water, electricity, or a way to feed themselves. All they had was a cabin sitting on four acres of land. As soon as the Raney’s arrived, they took inventory of their property. After some questioning and surveying, the owners mentioned to Marty a gas well located on the property. Unfortunately, the owners never attempted to use it due to fear and intimidation.

Excited by the potential of tapping into the natural gas, they set off to make it work. Eventually, the Raney’s got the pump running and went further by using it to provide power, running water, and heating. The owners learned invaluable lessons during the process and gained confidence in their ability to live off the land.

This story reminds me of how many of us are intimidated by studying or reading the bible. Many get easily overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. Take heart, reading, and exploring scripture is as easy as just showing up. When you make it a part of your daily discipline, you tap into a never-ending supply of fuel for your life.
