Who’s getting the glory?

“Hello, I’m Peter Graves. For Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. The nominees are Barbara Bosson as Fay Furillo in Hill Street Blues. Christina Pickles as nurse Helen Rosenthal in Saint Elsewhere. Doris Roberts as Mildred Krebs, Remington Steele. Madge Sinclair Ernestine Shoop in trapper John M.D. Betty Thomas as Lucille Bates in Hill Street Blues. The winner is Betty Thomas, Hill Street Blues.”

After the award announcement, Betty Thomas joyously gets up and starts to make toward the stage. As the camera follows her walking up, there is an interrupting voice from the stage. “Betty was not able to be here, and she asked me to accept this award and thank everybody else who is here. Thank you and thank everybody and especially Dick Schaap.” Immediately after, the man starts to make his way off stage but runs into Peter Graves and Betty Thomas, who’s finally made her way onto the stage. Everyone in the crowd seems confused as the three casually walk off.

Apparently, Betty was there to accept her award, and non-other than the infamous imposter Barry Bremen was the one who stood in to take her hard-earned Emmy Award from her. Not surprisingly, he was detained and sent to prison for his stunt. When asked why he did it, “I guess I deserved it — right?” asked Barry Bremen. “I mean, you take an award from somebody on ‘Hill Street Blues,’ I guess you should be thrown in jail.” It turns out Bremen planned the escapade months ago. He’d looked for ways to get in and how he would walk up on stage to accept an award for someone. “I guess I missed my mark. I should have accepted for Jane Curtin.” A no-show, Curtin was named best actress in a comedy series.

This story is an excellent reminder of how the enemy always seeks to steal God’s glory. Whether he’s having us question God’s word or straight up lying to us, the intention is always the same, to take glory from God. He almost doesn’t care whether we give it to him or ourselves as long as it’s not going to God. However, Scripture teaches us that everything we do and all we have should be to the glory of God. Next time the devil presents a temptation or doubt, ask yourself, “Who’s getting the glory?”
