Stay the Course

“Mami, please don’t forget to look for the lunar eclipse. Remember that my teacher said I need to observe it for a grade, and since I’m going to be sleeping, I need you to do this.” “O.K., son,” my wife said. “Let me know exactly what you see.” “Will do,” my wife said. With that, my son went to bed secure in the knowledge my wife would help him.

My wife had no problem making that promise because she knew she and I would walk the dog that night. But unfortunately, later that night, she was bogged down with house chores and asked me to walk the dog. I marveled at the glaring full moon in its glory as I set foot outside. The craters and dimples were evidence of past collisions and impacts. I also thought about how the moon could easily be thrown off course by any number of objects.

Yet, despite all of these potential hazards, God’s greatness sustains everything in the universe for His purpose. Nothing is random nor out of his control. Sadly on my way back, large clouds covered the view of the moon.

My son asked my wife the next day, and she admitted she had forgotten. He was upset, but I then stepped in and told him what had happened. I then shared what I saw and how it related to his situation. I told him that we’d endure challenges and develop scars in life. There will also be times we don’t see what’s behind the clouds. However, God is always in control and at work, using everything and anything to accomplish his will.

We know the lunar eclipse took place by faith even though we didn’t see it. Also, just like the moon stays in orbit despite the impacts and collisions, we can trust God is statuing the course accomplishing His purposes through trials.
