Take Care of It

I’d been practicing, studying, and preparing for my driver’s license test for months. Finally, the day came for me to test. When the day arrived, I asked my dad to take me in my mom’s car, which I used for practicing. “Sorry, son. Your mom’s not here. You need to take my car.” My heart sank because my dad drove a 1985 utility Astro van then.

I was not prepared to take the driving part of the exam with that vehicle. Unfortunately, it was too late, and I had to take the test. I did very well on the written exam. However, when it came to parallel parking, I failed miserably. Undeterred, I returned home and started practicing with my dad’s van.

After about a month, I retook the test and passed using my dad’s van! Then, excited by my new earned freedom, I drove my parent’s car and gained even more experience driving. Eventually, my dad acknowledged my commitment to keeping my promise of driving responsibly and maintaining good grades in school and decided to buy me a used car. When I got home, he had cleaned it up and handed me the keys.

“Son, this is your car now. That means you’re responsible for the gas, insurance, and anything else this car needs. You need to take care of this car on your own.” “Yes, dad! Thank you so much.” With that, I set off and handled all of the maintenance and repairs in the following years and paid my insurance.

My car story reminds me that when God gives us something, he expects us to take good care of it. Whether it be a relationship, job, business, home, or whatever he entrusts to us, we’re to honor that gift. We’re not to neglect it or assume everything will come easy. Although there will be challenges, we must persevere and protect.
