Sister Wives is an American reality TV show that documents the life of a polygamist family. The show follows the lives of father Kody Brown, his four wives and their 18 children. Brown and his four wives claim they agreed to participate in the show to educate everyone on polygamist families and to combat societal prejudices.
According to Brown, he believes his polygamist arrangement is legal because he is legally married to only one woman, while the marriages to his other wives are “spiritual unions.”
We see similar choices in the bible with concubines. A concubine was a woman acquired by a man as a secondary wife. Her purpose was to provide a male heir in the case his wife was barren and in general, enhance the family’s workforce and wealth, and to satisfy the man’s sexual desires.
Although concubines held rights and protections by Hebrew law, God did not approve of this marital model (Genesis 2:22-24). Considering this, I wondered why God didn’t step in to condemn this practice, especially after proclaiming marriage should only be to one person.
Then it hit me. God is never changing, always loving, righteous, and merciful. God’s grace extends across the old and new testaments. Despite our continuous sinful nature, He loves us and allows us to repent.
God is love, and love is a choice. This fact enables us to decide whether to accept and follow or reject him. More than that, submitting to His authority.
