One of my kids’ favorite activities is role-playing. Each one of them has a particular superhero costume. They love dressing up and imagining they’re flying through the air, shooting webs, and conquering evil.
I still remember those days myself when I would do just the same. One of my favorite superheroes at the time was Mighty Mouse. His battle cry, “Here I come to save the day,” and the ability for this small mouse to knock out enemies ten times his size appealed to me. Being young and small myself, I found comfort in his superhuman abilities.
Eventually, however, I outgrew the role-playing. Not because I abandoned the idea of a hero, but instead, I realized the reality of being a hero went beyond a nicely wrapped up thirty minute or two-hour storyline.
Today some men continue to idolize superhero figures and live vicariously through them in a fantasy world. Scripture, however, tells us we’re to leave behind childish things (1 Corinthians 13:11) and take on the responsibility of being mighty men of God. Childish thinking is the idea that it’s someone else’s responsibility to care, protect, and uphold honorable values.
Realistically, we’re all to be heroes and do the things we admire heroes for doing. It’s time we got out and started living a life our children and others will want to emulate. It’s time to stop being a Might Mouse and be Mighty Men of God.
