Recently I had a heated debate with a person over his incorrect theology and, after a lengthy discussion, realized he had on “blinders” to the truth. For those unfamiliar with blinders, they’re small squares of firm leather that attach to the harness at the side of the horse’s head.

There’s a comical story of how horse blinders came to be. The story says there was a preacher who had a wager with one of his friends. The preacher bet that his horse could walk up the stairs in his home.

The horse managed to accomplish the task with no problem, but coming back down was a different story. At that moment, the preacher decided to cover the horse’s head and successfully lead him down. He realized that covering all or part of the horse’s vision could keep the horse focused on what he wanted him to do by limiting the horse from seeing the whole picture.

This story reminds me of how sometimes we have blinders on and can’t see the truth that surrounds us. We focus only on what’s ahead, thinking we’re making progress but, in actuality, heading in the wrong direction.
