Buddy Tape

As my sons explored the woods, they came upon a creek. Not surprisingly, one of them decided to stone hop across the stream to get to the other side. Sure enough, one followed after the other. Then, as my youngest went to take his final hop, he slipped and fell. In the process, he extended his hand out to break his fall. Unfortunately, he slammed one of his fingers into a rock and fractured it.

After taking a couple of x-rays, the doctor gave the official diagnosis. It was a hairline fracture of his right index finger. The doctor then mentioned it was not severe enough to cast the entire hand. After that, however, he gave my son a condition. He said he would “buddy tape” his finger but also needed to follow all his instructions.

Buddy tapping is the non-medical term for immobilizing a digit to an adjacent, unaffected digit by taping them together. The idea is for the healthy neighboring toe or finger to support the injured member. In addition, taping them together provides the injured digit alignment, support, and protection to help heal correctly.

This story is an excellent reminder of how Scripture also calls us to bind ourselves or align ourselves with others to help us when we most need it. “Tapping” or coming alongside another brother can provide the support, alignment, and protection we need to heal or face adversity. So, how are you a buddy for, or do you have a buddy for those times?
