A couple of years ago, I received a red light camera ticket by mail. According to the letter, I was over the stop line when the traffic light turned red. I reviewed the video and believed I had done nothing wrong. Naturally, I requested a court hearing.

When I arrived, the court was full of people just like me. People were pleading their innocence as they appeared before the judge. One by one, they went up before the judge and argued their case. Almost all of them resulted in guilty verdicts.

Then one man came up before the judge and pleaded guilty. Unlike everyone else, the man said he knew he was guilty and was ready for his verdict. Taken back, the judge asked if he knew what he was doing. He nodded his head, affirming his guilty plea.

The judge looked at the man and said it was refreshing to hear someone taking responsibility and decided to wave all the charges and potential court fees despite the man pleading guilty. In an instant, he dismissed the case.

This story reminds me of how it is with our heavenly father. It’s only when we humbly go before Him with our guilt and shame that he’s ready to dismiss the punishment we deserve.
