In 1979 a passenger jet carrying 257 people left New Zealand for a sightseeing flight to Antarctica. As the pilots prepared to take flight, they were unaware of a minor 2-degree error in the flight coordinates. Although experienced, this trip to the Antarctic was a first for both of them. As they approached Antarctica, the pilots descended to give the passengers a better look at the landscape.
Unknown to them, the aircraft was now 28 miles to the east of where the pilots thought they were. Unfortunately for everyone, this also placed them on a direct path to Mount Erebus, an active volcano that rises from the frozen landscape to a height of more than 12,000 feet. Tragically, the plane crashed into the side of the volcano, killing everyone on board.
The small navigation error had significant consequences as a result. Experts in air navigation have a rule of thumb known as the “1 in 60 rule.” This rule states that for every degree a plane veers off its course, it misses its target destination by 1 mile for every 60 miles you fly. In essence, the farther you travel, the more you will be off course.
So, it can be with your life. If you don’t have the correct coordinates, you can be headed for danger. Take time to let Jesus take control and make the necessary course correction in your life so that you and everyone on board will arrive at the intended destination.
