International Business Machines (IBM), nicknamed “Big Blue,” started as a conglomeration of several companies that focused on automating routine business transactions. Back then, these were the first companies to build punched card-based data tabulating machines and time clocks. In 1911, these companies merged into the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR). Shortly after, in 1914, Thomas J. Watson Sr. joined the company as General Manager and became its president in 1915.
Eventually, the company changed its name to “International Business Machines” in 1924. Then under Watson’s tenure, the company began focusing on developing accounting and computing equipment used today by business, government, science, and industry. Over many decades, Watson helped lead the company to become a worldwide influence and powerhouse.
Watson’s first job was at age 18 as a bookkeeper in Clarence Risley’s Market in Painted Post, N.Y. Afterward, he sold sewing machines and musical instruments before joining the National Cash Register Company (NCR) as a salesman. When he eventually worked his way up to general sales manager, he inspired a dispirited NCR sales force with the motto, “THINK.” Watson eventually parlayed his experience and training at NCR to develop IBM’s management style and corporate culture, which he learned from John Henry Patterson.
Over his expansive 42 year career, Mr.Watson achieved many successful milestones and left inspiring leadership insights. One memorable quote regarding his work ethic was, “If you want to achieve excellence, you can get there today. As of this second, quit doing less than excellent work.”
His story reminds me of how we’re all to leave behind a legacy as well. Not so much focused on the companies we build, the titles we hold, or the money we make but rather, the positive impact we make in the lives of others. Specifically, how it brings glory to God and helps others discover the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
