Scottish-born inventor Alexander Graham Bell always had an interest in everything related to sound because not only was he born into a family of speech professionals, but his mother and his wife both had hearing impairments. Following in his father’s, uncle’s, and grandfather’s footsteps, Graham also became an expert in sound and public speaking. Eventually, when they moved to Boston, he worked alongside his parents in a speech therapy practice that taught deaf children to speak but also felt a great desire to continue learning more on the science of sound.

Then, three years after arriving at Boston to teach deaf students, Bell met Thomas A. Watson, an electrical designer, and mechanic. This meeting would prove revolutionary as the two would ultimately create one of the most important inventions in history. Shortly after meeting, the pair got to work, and on March 10, 1876, Bell spoke the famous words “Mr. Watson–come here–I want to see you.” into the first “acoustic telegraph,” and Mr. Watson was able to hear him in the next room.

Bell worked on many other inventions in the years that followed, including developing the wireless telephone that transmitted sound on a beam of light instead of electrical wires (the precursor to the cordless phone and fiber optics). On his passion for inventing communication devices, Bell said he saw a future when “friends converse with each other without leaving home.” His dream was for people to communicate directly and instantly without ever having to travel over long distances.

His story reminds me of how God did the same for us. Before Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for us, we had no direct connection to Him. However, through Christ and the power of prayer, we now have direct and instant communication with our Father. In essence, God is listening.
