How we can reflect the Son’s light for the benefit of others.
As a family of three teenage boys, my wife and I have our hands full. Whether it’s after get together’s, sports, church commitments, or more, there’s never enough time. as such, my wife and I take deliberate steps to carve out time on our schedule for each other.
One way we’ve managed to maximize our time together is by taking our dog on an evening walk. Walking the dog gives us uninterrupted time to talk and catch up. There’s always something interesting to talk about or discover on our walk.
On one memorable night, we walked out the door facing a “Supermoon.” If you’re unfamiliar with this event, a supermoon is when the Moon is near its closest approach to Earth. When this occurs, the Moon looks extremely large and very bright. Scientists estimate that Supermoons are about 16% brighter and much closer to Earth than an average Full Moon.
As we started our walk, we both commented on how amazing the Moon looked and how it lit up the nighttime sky. We also talked about how comforting it looked, shining with a warm shade of red. However, after staring at it for a while, I remembered that although it looked bright and comforting, the Moon itself doesn’t produce light.
Instead, the Moon reflects the light from the sun. Furthermore, as bright as the Moon may look to us, it only reflects between 3 and 12 percent of the sunlight that hits it. That means that what it’s reflecting is merely a fraction of all the available light that hits it.
This natural phenomenon is an excellent reminder of what our lives should do in this dark world. Although we may not be perfect, we must still reflect as much of the Son’s light as we can. To reflect the Son means others see Christ-like characteristics in us and share His saving message. When we do, we reflect a portion of the peace and light that Christ gives in abundance for others.
