Not long ago, my company started working with a start-up, and it was bittersweet. Over the years, I’ve worked with hundreds of start-ups ranging from digital currency providers to dry cleaners. One important lesson I’ve learned over the past eighteen years is, to be honest with yourself.

I’ve worked with owners who started their company because they had a passion for their product or service. They discovered a problem with a solution and wanted to share it with the world. I’ve also worked with those who started their companies only to make money. The ones who endure genuinely believe in what they’re offering.

This last start-up landed somewhere in between both. They had an interest, not passion, for their product, but also heavily focused on making money. They wanted to create a brand, “the world would fall in love with.” The problem was they were trying to solve a problem that didn’t exist and thought that merely crafting a compelling story would lead to success.

For obvious reasons, this approach didn’t work. I told them that just telling someone something doesn’t make it real. Actions speak louder than words, and at the moment, they were saying a lot of nothing. I advised them to stand for something greater and to take a position on something if they wanted to succeed.

Their story reminds me of how scripture teaches us not to be lukewarm for God. He wants your all or nothing. It’s not enough to say you follow him; he wants to see genuine devotion to him. Today take the time to evaluate if you truly believe in what Christ asks of you.

Pray and ask God to give you a new heart and new spirit for Christ. Create a plan of action on how you will follow him with your all.
