Many years ago, I opened my offices in a neglected area of downtown Miami. What attracted me to the area was the rawness and potential of the area. It also helped that the rent was much lower than in many other prominent places. The way I went about finding the ideal space was by praying for God to help me.

I then remember taking the initiative and walking for miles and into buildings that seemed interesting. Regardless if there were a sign posted outside, I would walk in and ask to speak to the manager or building owner. Sometimes the building had a vacancy and other times not. At other times the rent was too high or didn’t seem like the right place.

Finally, after about of week of searching, I discovered a small six-story building. I walked in and asked for the person in charge. They directed me to the second floor, where I knocked on the building owner’s door. We hit it off, and he agreed to show me a few offices. When we arrived at Suite 604, I immediately knew it was it. We negotiated the rent, and I signed the agreement.

We spent almost ten years in that office until we finally outgrew it. I have fond memories of the people I met, the work we did, the friendships I made, and, most notably, how we engaged with the community. This area is known for the number of homeless shelters and many other similar community outreach programs. In time, we launched a registered nonprofit to address the need.

Today I smile because it all started with a prayer and a knock.
