I recently reconnected with a childhood friend after more than 20 years. Occasionally I’d hear rumors about where he was but couldn’t reach him. Every once in a while I also looked for him online but couldn’t find him. In time, we drifted apart.

Then the other day I received a notification on Facebook. At first I was hesitant to respond because it was coming from someone I didn’t know. It turned out to be his wife’s account. Recognizing the last name, I replied. He has used her account to reach out to me. After we exchanged numbers he told me how his work didn’t allow for him to have an online presence.

We had a great conversation and I was so encouraged by his life’s story. It was great reconnecting with him and look forward toward keeping in touch. What I learned that day was the importance of friendship and how social media can be both a blessing and a curse. “More face, less book”, is what I tell friends when they ask me if I received their messages or seen their latest post.

What I mean by this is, ” Stop reading about my life and let’s start getting together more often”.
