No such thing as a vacuum in the natural or spiritual world.
The other day while watching a science-fiction movie with my boys, we witnessed an “explosion” in space. This event started a conversation among us about whether this could happen. There were many good theories and facts brought presented. As a result, one topic that arose from these discussions focused on vacuums.
There was much debate about whether there could be any explosions in space because many consider space a “vacuum.” But, as many know, explosions usually require oxygen or an added oxidant to “burn.” In space, however, there is no oxygen as there is on Earth.
Considering this fact, a few of us argued that it would therefore be impossible for there to be an “explosion” in space. We went back and forth until someone suggested we research this theory.
What we discovered was surprising. It turns out that we missed the logic boat as a perfect vacuum, by definition, means that something must be devoid of all matter. So, going further, even when you think there’s “nothing” there, there is always “something” taking up space. Ultimately, a perfect vacuum is impossible as quantum theory dictates that energy fluctuations known as “virtual particles” are continually popping in and out of existence, even in “empty” space.
All of this reminds me of how Scripture tells us we, too, are always filled with something. We are either filled with things of the world or the Spirit. The more we fill ourselves with worldly things, the less space we have for God. Therefore, we need to “empty” ourselves to be “filled” by God.
Scripture tells us that to be Spirit-filled, we must consistently read and meditate on God’s word and pray. The reason is that there’s no such thing as a vacuum in the natural or spiritual world.
