My good friend Drake loves to travel with his family and recently took a trip to north Florida. More specifically, Cape Coral. While there, he and his family took a nighttime kayak trip specifically for the bioluminescence experience.

Bioluminescence is the production of light by organisms through biochemical reactions. In essence, chemical reactions taking place in living things that release energy in the form of light. Scientists believe these organisms produce this light as an alarm system, possible communications with their species, or to lure in prey.

People who have seen this firsthand say it seems “out of this world” and “like the movie Avatar.” My bud Drake did his best to relay the moment, and although he took many pictures, he could not capture the true essence of what he witnessed. He said I needed to experience it for myself to understand what he saw.

His story reminds me we’re all called to be a light to this world for others to witness a bit of heaven here on earth. Our light is to draw others into a relationship with God so that they’ll find eternal amazement, joy, and love when they do.
