Reject the Fake

If you’re not familiar with Patek Philippe, they are one of the world’s oldest Swiss luxury watch and clock manufacturers. Partners Antoni Patek and Adrien Philippe established the company in 1839, over time, built a reputation for designing and manufacturing complicated mechanical watches. Today, the watches are highly desirable and collectible by watch enthusiasts.

Because of this, many watch collectors drool over coveted and limited edition Patek timepieces. Such was the case of rapper Lil Baby showcased his purchase of a Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 5711/1P “40th Anniversary.” on Instagram. When this watch first came out in 2016, it retailed for $113,400. Then in 2021, when he purchased the watch, he claimed to have paid over $400,000.

However, shortly after posting it on Instagram, followers started chiming in that there was a problem with the watch. It was a fake. Insensed by the counterfeit, the rapper then called out Rafaello & Co., which sold him the watch. Rafaello & Co. responded with a public apology and reimbursed him. They also threw in a couple of rings for his trouble.

His story reminds me of how many men mistakenly accept or take the counterfeit in place of the real. Unfortunately, sometimes they see the difference but choose the counterfeit for appearances. Whether it’s seeking love from causal encounters or buying “toys” as a form of status, counterfeits never satisfy.

Scripture tells us there is only one truth, one authentic way to find fulfillment and purpose. That way is through Jesus Christ and His word. So take time today to draw closer to Christ, the real deal, and reject all other counterfeits.
