What Are You Checking Out?
Over the summer, we challenged our kids to a reading challenge. The idea was for them to stay in the habit of reading and learning over the summer break. They decided that the library would be the best option for them. So far, they’ve read on various subjects, both fiction and non-fiction.
It’s encouraging to watch them read for our hours on end. Sometimes, they even wake up and immediately jump back into a book. Many books contain long storylines grouped as a series that hooks them from one book to another. Part of their experience is completing one book and returning to the library to check out the next one.
Bringing this story back around, the other day, when completing our devotional, one of my kids prayed that God would help us do the “right things.” I then asked him, “What is the right thing?” “Wel, you know, letting the Holy Spirit guide you.” That’s part of it.” I replied.
I then used their experience to remind them how our minds are like the library. Like the car, I explained that the Spirit takes us to God’s library, His word. However, just like the library, they can only check out whatever is available. That means that we need to “stock” the library of our minds with God’s word so that we check out whatever we put in.
Today, take an inventory of what’s on the shelves of your mind. How much of that is God’s word? Also, how will you stock up on God’s word to check out when you need it most?

Pray for direction on what to study in God’s word and what to “stock up” in your mind.

Contemplate and meditate on or memorize the passage. What is God saying to you? Then, determine what you will do with what you’ve learned.
