A long time ago, I decided to be active in the growth of my children’s physical and spiritual lives. As part of this commitment, I walk my kids to school when I could quickly drive them. Over the past few years, we’ve had great conversations as well as taken advantage of learning opportunities. Recently, however, there are two conversations I have.

The first is with all three of them. As we walk, we discuss general life topics, virtues, and questions related to God. After I drop off the younger ones, the walk continues with my oldest, which now attends middle school. Unlike the conversations we have with his younger siblings, our conversations are more profound.

As they mature, those conversations will deepen as the topics become more in-depth and challenging. My goal is for them to grow not only physically but also mentally and spiritually. I pray for wisdom to guide them to be the men God has called us all to be.

This situation reminds me of Paul’s writing, where he tells the church they are still drinking “milk” when they should have moved onto “meat.” Although many of us are physically mature, many live stunted in spiritual immaturity. As men, it’s our responsibility to grow and mature in both areas.
