Photography class was part of the art program I attended in middle school. Before this class, photography to me was only about capturing birthdays and special events. What photography class taught me was that a photo could do more than capture a moment but instead, convey emotion and inspire.

Photography back then was very challenging but rewarding. Challenging because, during these analog days, I wasn’t sure what shot I got until the last stage of development. The process was complicated and time-intensive. Add to this that I only had twenty-four exposures, and every shot needed to count. These limitations required me to understand light, exposure, and composition thoroughly.

Considering all this, I was very selective about the photos I took. My selection process involved “seeing” the picture as developed. I had to learn how to translate all the colors I saw into black and white, as well as contrast and shadows. The reward came after taking the film back to the studio, and developing it to find what I had pictured was printed.

What all of this taught me was that we must do our best to have a clear picture of what we want to accomplish before taking action. We must also prepare in advance what it will take to make that vision a reality. When we do, we’ll get picture-perfect results.
