We’re recently undertaking a new construction project at home. After many years of saving and dreaming, my wife and I are finally building an outside patio. Every time we’ve tried to start the project, some obstacle has come up. Finally, this year we start the build.

Because of some formal training as an architect, I’m able to envision the final design as already built. I see the the columns, bbq island, the placement of furniture, and just about every aspect. I can also easily rearrange objects and design in my mind with ease.

My wife, on the other hand, find’s it difficult to see what I see. She’s efficient and always requests drawings and a physical walkthrough of how everything is laid out. She also continually asks for clarity and for me to repeat every detail. Even then, it’s difficult for her to see the final picture.

The beauty of this dynamic is that it forces me the “dreamer” to think about and make things more “real” for her. It also makes me think about the details of how the project will come to fruition. I need to think about specific materials, cuts, hardware, etc.

Scripture reminds us we’re to have a vision, a goal of what we desire to accomplish, but also a plan on how we will get there.
